What all people need is an encounter with our risen Lord.  But not just a one time experience.  Rather, Christian faith is something that takes a lifetime to grow.  It was once said that, ‘one does not surrender a life in an instant.  That which is lifelong can only be surrendered in a lifetime.” This is FBC Youth’s philosophy in a nutshell.  We strive not only to introduce you to Christ, but to show you how to grow in Him.

The only hope for today’s teens is the only hope for our world—a daily, personal relationship with Jesus Christ that transforms everything about you.  That is what we strive to instill in the Youth who are a part of the ministry of First Baptist Church—a love for Jesus that keeps them strong throughout life.

What to expect from the FBC Student Ministry:

Wednesday Night Live!

Supper, praise and worship, fellowship, games, skits, and genuine bible study to top it all off:  This is not just any worship experience, but a chance for our youth to not only begin to understand what it really means to be in relationship with a God that loves them and cares for them, but also enjoy a time of encouragement for the real-world situations that they are thrust into each day through comprehensive Bible study.  During WNL, we talk about very practical ideas that can be put into practice when it comes to the issues, struggles, and joys of a consistent walk with Christ!

Also, if you are interested, there are a multitude of ways to plug in to the worship preparation and leadership of our Wednesday nights!  Interested?  Check us out each Wednesday night from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Youth Activities Building of First Baptist!

Prayer Breakfast

Every Friday morning during the school year, our youth have a great time of food and prayer!   The Chick-Fil-A on Wynnton Rd. in Columbus has been our host for almost four years, and continue to offer not only a great breakfast, but a very welcoming environment for our youth group.  Our high school students come at 6:30 a.m., and after a time of fellowship, food, and devotion, head to school as the middle school student arrive by 7 a.m.  This time each week is a great time for our kids to be reminded at the beginning of another school day the fact that there is a community of believers that care for them, and that there is no better way than to start your day off than with time spent with God!

Youth Choir

On Sunday afternoon’s, the beautiful voices you hear around FBC can be attributed to our youth choir!  What a better way to showcase your ability than through song, sung for Jesus Christ?  Led by an amazing leader, and talented music minister, Keenan Franklin, the group practices and prepares music perfectly suited for teenagers that is regularly shared with the church as a whole.  The group meets Sunday’s at 5 p.m., unless otherwise noted.  We’ll see you there!

Fall Retreat

Every fall, FBC Student Ministry enjoys the Fall Retreat!  This retreat, open to all 6th-12th graders, is a much-anticipated event by student and adult alike.  For the past three years, we have traveled to Panama City and Laguna Beach Christian Resort!  You haven’t fully enjoyed the beach until you’ve enjoyed the beach in the fall!  Our retreat format centers around worship time and small group bible study, with small group competition activities on the beach to encourage further strengthening of those bonds of friendship!   Look for info on this retreat in September of 2008!

Winter Retreat

Does sliding down a mountain of snow with blades of steel strapped to your feet sound like a great time!?  If so, we have just the event for you!  Each winter, our youth have the opportunity of joining in a retreat of epic proportions: a snow-skiing trip!  The goal is to combine the retreat format that we enjoy so thoroughly (small group bible study and worship) with the exciting sport of snow-skiing!  Whether you are a professional or beginner, young or old, this is routinely one of the most anticipated times of the year!

Fishing Trip/Choir Trip

No plans for Spring Break?!  Well, we’ve got that covered.  For longer than any of us can remember, two of FBC’s most outrageous characters,Mr. Lamar and Judge Pullen, generously give of their time and resources to lead any and all FBC boys on a fishing trip to Apalachicola, Florida!  But wait, this opportunity gets better.  Not only do you get to enjoy fishing with friends in Florida, but you also do it for the bargain-basement rate of absolutely no cost!

And let’s not forget the Choir trip, a real reward for those tireless souls that practice their singing talents each week in the halls of the FBC music suite.  Attending a specific percentage of these practices and performances also makes this trip EXTREMELY affordable!  Not to mention, Florida is regularly the destination for this trip as well.

Disciple NOW!

For the past two years, our youth have participated in a weekend of discipleship and bible study at the Pine Eden Retreat Center in Hamilton, Georgia.  Serving as our main spring retreat, this weekend is yet another opportunity to plug into a group that is focused on bible study, worship, and fellowship!  And if you are lucky, you might run into a pair of people that go by the name of Jonathon and Lisa Moore, our fantastic D-NOW ’07 and ’08 worship-leading duo!

Summer Activities

During the summer, there is just so much going on!  Thankfully, all of it is purposeful, and fun.  While school is out, we have so much time to enjoy together.  While weekly fun activities and trips are the status quo (like a yearly trip in August to the Ocoee River for some bone-chilling white-water rafting), helping our community both inside and outside the church is important as well.  Don’t forget:  Passport Camp!  July 19th – 27th, 2008.  Boston, Massachusetts!   Sign-ups begin in April!

Mission Opportunities

If there is one thing we know how to do here, it has got to be reaching out in the name of Jesus Christ.  Look outside your window.  Go ahead!  If you peered our long enough, you would see a world in desperate need of purpose, and relationship.  Not just any relationship though, but a relationship with a savior that personifies grace, love, forgiveness, and hope.  So if you see an FBC van traveling down the interstate towards New Orleans, or Tampa, FL., or even around town to Azalea Trace Nursing Home, just know that group and those kids are going to share the name of Jesus Christ through a helping hand, and through a loving word.  And also, remember that in that precious transaction of give and take, we are encouraged just as much as those people that we have the blessed opportunity to help.

Youth Council

Each August and January, teenagers are assembled from an application process to create a leadership group that leads our youth ministry in a multitude of ways!  From planning, to encouraging, to retreat preparation, these kids are a vital part of what happens within the framework of our ministry.  Interested in being a leader?  Interested in investing time in the ministry that helps to serve you?  Then become a member of the Youth Council!

Sunday evening fellowship

As a traditional Baptist church, our congregation continues to enjoy an intimate time of worship each Sunday night.  If you happen to stop by for this service, you will regularly notice multiple rows of youth actively involved and plugged in to the worship experience!  Following our worship experience, we regularly have times of fellowship at the nearest restaurant of choice for that evening!  What more could you need on a Sunday night??
