Welcome to First Baptist Church of Columbus!

OUR MISSION:

Loving none more than Christ, loving others as ourselves, we strive to reflect God's love to all as well as the Great Commission.

Advent Book Reading for the day:

Thursday, December 13, 2018 PEACE  The LORD lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace.  Numbers 6:26

I recently read this summary of a column written many years ago.  Ernie Pyle, famous for his coverage of World War II, wrote the column about a captured German soldier who was taken to an American field hospital to have his wounds treated. The German had heard Nazi propaganda stories of American brutality to POWs; so when a medic approached him with a hypodermic needle of morphine, he naturally assumed he was about to be tortured. The man kicked up quite a fuss until, looking around, he realized that he was being treated the same as the American patients.  He was amazed! He grew even more amazed when he saw an American chaplain making the rounds and handing out care packages of cigarettes, chocolate, tooth powder, soap and other comfort items. The chaplain gave him a care package too,      making no distinction.  The German's countenance changed. He began smiling, then grinning, like a little boy playing with new toys.
This story touched me because it shows the change in the facial expression of a person who goes from fear to trust.  When the writer of Numbers offers this    passage, which we so often use in benedictions, he is calling upon the Lord to lift up His countenance upon us with the result of giving peace to the individual.  The word for countenance in Hebrew is, panah or face.  The prayer is that God will turn His face toward the person who needs peace and offer that peace.  In the beautiful solo we often use during the Christmas season, Mary Did You Know?, the writer includes the phrase, Did you know . . . when you kiss your   little baby, you kiss the face of God?  Indeed, God answered the prayer of      Numbers 6:26.  God lifted His countenance (face) before His creation in a     manger—it was the face of a child, Jesus! His message is an invitation to move from fear to trust . . . then OUR countenance will change to the face of peace.  May we see the face of God during this season and find His peace.

Prayer: O Lord, please bless us and keep us; please make Your face to shine upon us and be gracious to us; please lift up Your countenance upon us and give us Your peace. Please take us from fear to peace, and may our countenance reflect and offer witness to your peace.  In Jesus’ Name, AMEN.

OUR CALENDAR

OUR VISION

Everything our Church Family does is filtered through hearts committed to faith in Christ, joining together in fellowship, desiring to share Christ’s love with others and our missions opportunities.  We are constantly, prayerfully looking for what God would have us do next.  This may lead us all the way to the other side of the world or right across the street.
